When approached by an automotive OEM to address concerns over nonuniform appearance and corrosion on black fasteners, Columbia Chemical’s technical OEM team gathered the necessary information, evaluated the adhesion and appearance issues, talked with the applicator to understand their frustrations with the current chemistry and then set to work developing a solution. A specialty functional finish for black fasteners was developed as a result. This high-gloss black finish is achieved using Columbia Chemical’s zinc-nickel process, Zinc-Chro-Shield CR chromium sealer, Zinc-Chro-Shield HG high gloss sealer, COLDIP® Ni-Z Black 510 black trivalent passivate and COLFIN TTM-0814B torque tension modifier.
